I couldn’t believe it, after a lifetime of never having regular periods (except fake ones when on the pill), I was onto my third month and had just had 3 natural periods in a row.
Was this actually working?
I was over the moon, my body was finally responding!
That was my BIG AHA! moment that PCOS could be managed naturally…but let me backtrack a little bit to how I got there.
Throughout my young life I struggled with problem skin, swings in my weight, disordered eating, and very irregular periods (like maybe 3 times per year). The biggest impact for me though was the knock-on effect of this was on my self-esteem and I struggled with depression and lack of self-confidence. And as a result I wasn’t really living.
In order to ‘treat’ all this, I got put on the pill. I was led to believe by doctors that this synthetic hormone disrupter was ‘balancing my hormones’.
In my early twenties, I started to get other symptoms despite being on the pill. Embarrassing dark hair sprouting where it wasn’t supposed to, extreme fatigue, hair falling out like crazy and continued bad skin especially on my jaw line.
Then one day my period came, and after the usual week, it didn’t stop. Four weeks passed, and I was still bleeding.
It was after this that my doctors took me off the pill, because of the risks.
I was told, ‘Just keep an eye on your periods. As long as you have one period three months, you should be okay’.
That was it. Really? I came away feeling like Doctors are useless!
As a practicing dietician at the time, I turned to nutrition and designed myself a super PCOS diet. And it made a huge difference! I lost weight, I had more energy and less fatigue and my symptoms were a bit better.
But things still weren’t perfect, I struggled to stick to my OWN DIET long term, because let’s face it…I love life, and I’m a foodie and I just wanted to have a bit of fun too! So I kinda lapsed a little bit, and my periods got a little more irregular again.
Then two years later, I discovered something new!
I was visiting an old friend.
She mentioned that she had started cleaning with and using only natural personal care products.
She told me that the chemicals in products harm our health in so many ways, even messing with the balance of our hormones!
Of course, my ears pricked up at this! Could some of my problem be the fact that I was worsening my PCOS by having these chemicals in my life?
I was a bit sceptical though, was this really a thing?
But, the nerd in me was also curious. I started reading up on it and doing some research of my own.
And I didn’t have to look very hard to find the evidence of just how much hormone disrupters affect our bodies and are a big contributor to PCOS.
This experience was sort of a trigger for me. It somehow shot me into a new mindset that there were many more things I COULD BE doing to support and heal my body naturally.
And it was this that led me to relook at PCOS with fresh eyes and question everything else I knew. And as a result I understand PCOS now in a way I never did and all the things all us Cysters should be doing to look after our bodies so they can look after us. Not just one thing..oh just take this pill or oh just take this supplement: The WHOLE picture!
And that’s when I put together my own PCOS protocol. And it worked like AWESOME-NESS! My periods have been regular for a year and a half at the time of writing this, my skin is the clearest it has ever been, I get a couple of dark hairs here and there but it’s totally manageable and doesn’t depress me the way it used to. My weight is stable and my confidence is the best it’s ever been!
Oh, and if you’re thinking I had to do some crazy, super plan in order to heal myself – I didn’t. I don’t believe in strict anymore.
I couldn’t even stick to my own diet forever after I CREATED it. And that made me realise I needed to create something with more flexibility and make sure the other pieces of the puzzle were in place so I didn’t have to be super strict on any one of them.
For a while I didn’t realise how many women were struggling with the same things I did. It makes me sad every time I see woman experiencing similar problems to what I had and unsure of the best way to manage them. So I decided I wanted to share my protocol with other woman who still feel the way I used to.
I wish that I had known how simple it is to manage my PCOS years before I actually figured it out!
My belief is that everyone can be successful in managing their PCOS while having more fun and getting more out of life than they ever have!
So I started my movement ‘PCOS Power’ so I could empower women with to have fun and live their best lives while also looking after their health.
