Most people have heard about Lavender oil as a sleep aid, but there are also other oils which are great as part of your bedtime routine. Cedarwood, Orange and Vetiver are a few more of my favourites to diffuse when I want to nod off…
Cedarwood oil is well known for it’s sleep inducing benefits being a natural sedative. It works by stimulating release of serotonin in the brain which converts into melatonin for a restful sleep. Melatonin is the most powerful natural remedy for restoring both quality and quantity of sleep. It improves the length of time the body sustains deep, stage 4 sleep – the time when the immune system and growth hormone production reaches it’s maximum.
I love Lavender for its calming properties. Did you know Lavender actually slows your heart rate and lowers your body temperature a little bit, helping to get you ready for sleep?
Orange is absolutely amazing for calming one’s nerves. All citrus oils contain limonene which is great for reducing anxiety. I don’t know about you, but when I start to struggle to get to sleep, I get anxious about not being able to sleep which just makes the whole cycle worse. Orange is great for calming this reaction before it starts!
Vetiver’s magic lies in its ability to calm racing thoughts. Ever lie awake at night because you have a hundred things running through your mind? If so, this is the oil for you!
A note on oil quality
Remember to use essential oils that are 100% pure, high quality and therapeutic grade oils, an most importantly authentic to the base plant. This means that the oil is distilled and bottled in such a way that it maintains it’s integrity and active properties which provide the benefits. If you use cheap or fragrance oils they will not have the therapeutic properties you are looking for…they will be nothing more than a nice smell.
The BEST ‘Sleep Serum’ Ever…
Nodding off easily and then getting good, deep quality sleep really makes a difference.
This is the recipe for my Sleep Serum – I roll it on the soles of my feet and big toe (this allows quickest absorption into the bloodstream and allows the compounds to make their way to my brain quickly to release the melatonin that I need for sleep).
Sleep Serum Recipe:
- 10ml roller bottle
- 15 drops Lavender
- 12 drops Cedarwood
- 5 drops Vetiver
- Fill with jojoba oil, and shake
You can also diffuse a blend of the above oils in your diffuser for 30 mins before you go to sleep!
